Position Summary
The Controller will oversee day-to-day accounting operations and provide financial leadership across multiple active communities and projects. This individual will be responsible for financial reporting, cost management, budgeting support, process improvement initiatives, and the development of an established accounting team.
The ideal candidate understands the financial complexities of residential construction, including project costing, development expenditures, inventory management, and operational reporting.
Responsibilities
- Manage all accounting operations, including general ledger, financial reporting, accounts payable, and month-end close activities
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Monitor project costs, development expenditures, and construction-related financial activity
- Analyze budget-to-actual results and investigate variances
- Support annual budgeting and forecasting processes
- Develop and maintain effective internal controls and accounting procedures
- Review job-cost reporting and assist operational leaders with financial analysis
- Coordinate external audit requests and corporate reporting requirements
- Evaluate and improve accounting workflows, systems, and reporting tools
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff
- Partner with construction, purchasing, sales, and administrative teams to support business objectives
- Ensure compliance with company policies and accounting standards
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Previous Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or senior finance leadership experience
- Strong understanding of construction accounting, job costing, and project-based financial reporting
- Experience managing accounting teams
- Demonstrated history of career stability and professional growth
- Advanced Excel and financial systems proficiency
Preferred
- CPA designation
- Public accounting background
- ERP experience
- Experience supporting multi-community or multi-project construction operations
